ADEPT – (Achieve Develop Explore Programme for Trainees)

NIMDTA, in cooperation with partner host organisations in Northern Ireland, launched a Clinical Leadership Fellows’ programme for the first time during  the 2015-2016 training year. This programme provides senior doctors in training an opportunity to take time out of programme for 1 year to work in an apprenticeship model with senior leaders in host organisations in Northern Ireland to develop organisational and leadership skills.

Clinical Leadership Fellows undertake one or more specific projects in their host organisations under supervision, attend formal leadership training including mentoring and coaching, and be provided with opportunities to network and learn with healthcare colleagues.

Open Evening

NIMDTA in partnership with the HSC Leadership Centre and HSC Trusts are pleased to announce the plans for the NI Clinical Leadership Fellowship Programme ADEPT for 2019/20. 

The ADEPT Clinical Leadership Fellows’ Open Evening will take place on Monday 21st January 2019 from 5.00pm – 7.00pm at NIMDTA, 42 Beechill Road, Belfast. The event is tailored for those interested in applying to the 2019/20 ADEPT Clinical Leadership Programme. 

Interested applicants will be greeted with a light buffet followed by short presentations from the HSC Leadership Centre and previous ADEPT Clinical Leadership Fellows. Dr Ian Steele, Director of Hospital Specialty Training will provide a short summary of the application and recruitment process. Interested applicants will then have the opportunity to meet with host organisations to discuss potential projects. Current and previous ADEPT Fellows will also be on site if you wish to know more about taking time out of programme.

Further Information of the ADEPT Programme 

This programme is open to senior trainees in GP, Dental or Specialty Postgraduate Medical Training Programmes in NI who would be interested in taking one-year Out of Programme for Experience (OOPE) to develop leadership, management and organisational skills and contribute to improving the delivery of healthcare and medical education in NI. 

Leadership Fellows will be appointed through a competitive process involving submission of an application form, attendance at interview and delivery of a presentation. 

Leadership Fellows will undertake one or more specific projects in their host organisation under supervision, attend leadership training and be provided with fantastic opportunities to network and learn with healthcare colleagues. During their fellowships, the fellows will be working with senior leaders in host organisations in Northern Ireland in an apprenticeship model. 

The scheme aims to provide Health and Social Care NI (HSCNI) doctors with the knowledge, skills and experience to offer leadership in their workplace and more widely in HSCNI whenever they complete training.

Places on ADEPT are open to the following NIMDTA trainees:

· Specialty trainees in a Northern Ireland postgraduate medical training programme who will be ST4 level or above in August 2019, with a minimum of 6-12 months WTE training remaining at August 2019.
· General Practice trainees in the Northern Ireland GP training programme who will have 6-18 months WTE Training remaining at August 2019.
· Specialty trainees in a Northern Ireland postgraduate dental training programme who will be ST3 level or above in August 2019, with a minimum of 6-12 months WTE training remaining at August 2019.

Please note that trainees are eligible to apply for all ADEPT projects, not just projects specific to their training programmes, unless otherwise stated.

Leadership Development Programme
The Clinical Leadership Fellows will also be undertaking a Leadership Development Programme during 2016-17 which is being delivered by the HSC Leadership Centre.

This Leadership Development Programme consists of induction, coaching, mentoring, insight visits, action learning set, leadership modules and a quality improvement project.
