PMETB Survey 2010

Northern Ireland leads the way

This year’s National Training Surveys are underway in the Northern Ireland. More than 3000 trainees and trainers collectively have been sent emails inviting them to take part in the online survey.

Northern Ireland is leading the UK in this year’s roll out of the surveys with the online reports expected to be available in June 2010; two months ahead of the rest of the UK.

Respondents involved in specialty, including GP and foundation training are encouraged to take 20 minutes to fill out the online survey.

Those who do not receive an email invitation should visit: www.pmetbtrainingsurveys.org

Results from the surveys will be used, together with other evidence - such as annual deanery reports - to quality assure training throughout the UK in all specialties, from foundation to completion.

Specifically, surveys outcomes can:

  • Ensure training standards are being met
  • Inform the development of future policy
  • Identify concerns in training such as under-resourcing
  • Help prepare for the future needs of training and trainees
  • Highlight areas of notable practice

PMETB merges with the GMC in April; the surveys remain a valuable tool for capturing on-the-ground perspectives of training and will continue to run year on year under the GMC umbrella.

Dr Terry McMurray, Chief Executive of the Northern Ireland Deanery, recognises the important role the surveys play in the work PMETB does to improve training in the UK.

“The training surveys are one of the most important ways the Northern Ireland Deanery can measure the views of our trainers and trainees. The surveys reports are our way to hear your views on the training we deliver and see how this compares with the rest of the UK.

“However, the only way to capture an accurate snapshot of NIMDTA’s training is by ensuring we deliver a solid response rate. Make sure you contribute to this year’s surveys and help yourself, your colleagues and the deanery identify where improvements can be made.”

Up-to-date information about the surveys can be found on the surveys website at www.pmetbtrainingsurveys.org

Further enquiries can be addressed to pmetbtrainingsurveys@gmc-uk.org

Consultants and GP Trainers: it is time to have your say!

Response rates to the PMETB National Survey of Trainers since its launch have not reached the levels PMETB need to report the results by provider. All consultants, GP trainers and GPs with foundation trainees are asked to submit a form to ensure we can provide useful results that will help us quality assure the training you provide.

Why every submission counts

By completing the survey you will ensure that we can:

  • Provide reports on training by specialties, deaneries and NHS organisations
  • See how your training standards compare against others
  • Give consultants the chance to voice their concerns at local and national levels

Go to: http://www.pmetb.org.uk/trainersurvey, where if you haven’t already done so, you will be able to request a code for access and take part in the survey.

PMETB TRAINEE SURVEY

URGENT RESPONSE TO PMETB TRAINEE SURVEY REQUIRED.

The Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB) have just recently commenced its survey of all Specialty and Foundation trainees in the UK.   You may have received an email already from PMETB or if not will do so soon.   The purpose of this survey is for trainees to give feedback to a third party which in turn can then be anonymously returned to the Deanery - NIMDTA.

The information received gives NIMDTA an opportunity to address any areas of concern raised but also to share good practice across Specialties and providers of training. The feedback received has proved to be very useful to date.

At present, the response rate from Northern Ireland trainees is 32%.

This is a major concern and I would therefore encourage you to complete the survey when it is sent to you.  You should note that this survey is a requirement, and is part of your conditions of training.

Please note the closing date for responses is Monday 23 March 2009.

Health Ministers Statement on Moderising Medical Careers

Health Minister, Shaun Woodward today endorsed the new framework for the way doctors will be trained in future.  The framework is the latest stage of the  Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) initiative.  This initiative is under the direction of the MMC UK Strategy Group, on which Northern Ireland is represented.

Commenting on the new proposals the Minister said, "I am fully supportive of the further reforms announced today by my colleague, Lord Warner. These proposals are fully in line with developments in the wider Health Service generally and are firmly based in providing better care for patients.
They will achieve this through producing doctors who are not only highly competent in the skills we traditionally associate with doctors, but are also effective team workers and are clear about their contribution to a safe and effective service to patients."

Work is ongoing with all stakeholders at national and local level to further develop specialty training within the framework.  New specialty training programmes will be introduced from August 2007 when the first cohort of foundation doctors complete the Foundation Programme.

Notes to Editors:
