Frequently Asked Questions

1. At what level of knowledge is the examination set?
The exam is aimed at someone 2 years post qualification.

2. Is the examination related to basic science topics?
No.  Any relevant basic sciences are examined in an applied situation and all references to basic science topics relate to clinical situations that arise in everyday practice.  E.g. Spread of Infection, Antibiotic Prescribing, Dental problems with Reduced Salivary Secretion.

3. I am just finished VDP and am unsure if I want to stay in practice or enter a hospital career pathway?
The Part 1 MFGDP and Part A MFDS carry reciprocity.  This means that if you pass MFGDP Part 1, you are exempt Part A MFDS and are able to proceed directly to MFDS Part B on taking up your SHO post.

4. What experience do I require to submit myself to the examination?

  • You must be currently registered with the GDC.
  • For the coursework module, you must have been engaged in the practice of Dentistry for at least 6 months since qualification and have 15 hours of approved postgraduate activity (ideal for VDPs coming to the latter part of their course).
  • For Part 1, you must have been engaged in the practice of Dentistry for at least 12 months since qualification and have 25 hours of approved postgraduate activity.
  • For Part 2, you must have been engaged in the practice of Dentistry for at least 2 years since qualification and have, recorded 50  hours of approved postgraduate activity.

5. Do the elements of the examination take up excess time away from practice?
No.  The areas of reflective learning and portfolio writing are closely related to areas of practice which already require protocols; eg  Radiation Regulations, Record Keeping, Cross Infection Control, Staff Training and Management, Practice Legislation and Emergencies in Practice.

6. Do I have to travel to London to sit parts of the examination?
No.  The recent diet of MFGDP was so well supported that the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners allowed the examination to be held in the School of Dentistry, Belfast.  The continuous assessment aspects are submitted locally and marked by our Divisional Examiner.

7. Is the MFGDP(UK) a recognised qualification?
Yes.  The qualification is registerable with the GDC and can be placed on any practice literature.

8. What help is available?
There will be a study group starting in September 04 and running on a monthly basis through until the spring MFGDP examination in April 2005 (see Study Club Programme).  This format provides guidance, support and direction to your studying.

9. What is the success rate of applicants?
The national average pass rate for all the Faculty divisions is approximately 80%.  In the April 2004 Part 1 examination, the N. Ireland division excelled itself with 100% success.  The participants consisted of Associates and Principals with a range of experience from 2 – 3 years post qualification.

10. I am interested, what do I do now?
There is an introductory meeting to outline the details of the examination on  Monday 13th September in the Ennis Room, Belfast City Hospital at 7.00pm sharp.
