General Professional Training (GPT) is a 2-year training scheme for dental graduates. It incorporates training from General Dental Practice, Hospital and Community Dentistry.  Trainees are attached part-time to an appointment training practice throughout the two years of the scheme and divide the remainder of the week between placements in the Community and Hospital dental services. Trainees spend an average of 2/3 days in the practice over a two year period.

Recruitment - Trainer and Trainee - 2010/2012 scheme

Trainer Recruitment: 

 Are you enthusiastic about training and education?  Are you a supportive employer?  Could you commit to the development of a young dentist?  Why not share your skills and knowledge with a junior colleage and apply for a Trainer position on the Northern Ireland General Professional Training Scheme.  The closing date for applications is Thursday 28 January 2010.

There are 4 places available. Trainers are selected by a two stage process.  Firstly a practice assessment* is carried out to assess the suitability of the practice as a training environment.   The second stage is a formal interview.  Interviews for GPT trainers will take place on Wednesday 17 February 2010. Successful applicants must then attend a Meet the Trainer day where they will have the opportunity to meet with the selected Trainees.  The Meet the Trainer day will be held on Saturday 20 February 2010.

NIMDTA welcomes additional funding made available to trainers secured in August 2008.  In addition to the current Trainer grant of £9036, paid monthly over two years, an additional £12,447 is obtainable in each of the training years (subject to meeting set criteria).

* Please note that practice assessments can be carried out before the closing date.  Please contact a member of the Dental Team to arrange your assessment now.  A practice assessment certificate will be awarded to satisfactory practices.  This is valid for two years.

Trainee Recruitment:

The closing date for trainee applications is Thursday 7 January 2010.  Interviews will be held on 25/26 January 2010.  Successful applicants will be invited to attend a Meet the Trainer event on Saturday 20 February 2010 in the Ramada Hotel, Shaw’s Bridge, Belfast where both trainees and appointed GPT trainers will have the opportunity to meet each other and complete a matching form which NIMDTA will collate and process.

 Application documents will be available from the end of October.

 Trainee applicants must not visit training practices or contact prospective trainers. This will be regarded as canvassing, which is not permitted.
