CAN I KEEP MY CURRENT APPRAISER?
A list of appraisers appointed by NIMDTA is available.  If your previous appraiser’s name appears on this list, it may be possible to continue to use this appraiser. However, national guidelines recommend that doctors change their appraiser every 3 years.

DO I HAVE TO COMPLETE A GP APPRAISAL EVERY YEAR?
Yes. Appraisal is a contractual obligation and non-participation will be referred to the HSS Boards. This information will in turn be forwarded to the CSA and inclusion within the Primary Medical Performers List (PMPL) may be affected. A GP must be accepted on to the PMPL in order to provide a clinical service in General Practice regardless of being salaried, sessional or out of hours doctor.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I HAVE MISSED MY 2007/08 GP APPRAISAL?
A GP must be accepted on to the PMPL in order to provide a clinical service in General Practice regardless of being Salaried, Sessional or Out of Hours doctor. If you have been unable to complete your 2007/08 GP Appraisal before 31 March 2008, it will be documented as a gap year in your appraisal history.  In this case, you must inform your HSSB Medical Advisor immediately.

If however you have extenuating circumstances e.g. illness, you can request exemption from the appraisal scheme for the current appraisal year.  Contact your HSSB Medical Advisor regarding your circumstances.  If these circumstances are accepted by your Board, NIMDTA will simply be informed that extenuating circumstances have been recorded for you.  NIMDTA will write to you at the beginning of the next appraisal year to ascertain if you wish to be included in the scheme that year.  You will then be required to complete an appraisal within 6 months of returning to work.  If you have any further queries contact your HSSB Medical Advisor or the GP Appraisal team at NIMDTA.
