The Northern Ireland GP Specialty Training Programme

In Northern Ireland there are approximately 1500 GP Performers. Approximately 30% work on a part-time basis. GPs are remunerated by the NHS on a contractual basis related to the number of patients and their range of services. The contract is with one of the 4 Area HSS Boards, which have the responsibility for ensuring that there are sufficient doctors and dentists in their areas. The number of doctors training for a career in General Practice is increasing from August 2007 with the expectation that by 2009 65 doctors will complete GP training each year instead of 50.

Length and Requirements of Training

From August 2007 Specialty Training for General Practice in Northern Ireland which is mandatory presently requires a trainee to spend 18months in approved hospital posts and 18 months in a Training General Practice, following the Foundation Programme.

  • There are presently 2 Research  posts advertised annually which provide two years training at ST Registrar level to include research skills.

There are presently six schemes/training programmes available rising to seven in 2008.  These are based in Belfast, Londonderry, Antrim/Coleraine, Craigavon/Newry, North Down and Enniskillen/Omagh.  Posts are advertised by the  The National Recruitment Office  in January - February each year for starting in August.  Potential GP trainees should make sure they understand the requirements for training in General Practice and if in doubt consult the Director or Associate Director  responsible for Recruitment in General Practice. Selection for training in General Practice takes place at an Assessment Centre in Spring time of each year. Please visit the GP Specialty Training recruitment page for dates and venues of the next recruitment round. Membership of the rcgp   is not presently an essential qualification for entry into general practice but provides evidence that the trainee has reached an optimal standard before starting independent practice. All Northern Ireland GP Registrars normally sit the membership examination.

From August 2007 the nMRCGP examination will be in place, which will be used for certification for fitness to practice as a General Practitioner.  Transition arrangements from summative Assessment to the new MRCGP examination will be in place for 2007/2008.
