Hospital Medicine

The Hospital Training Department is responsible for all grades of Medical Trainees who are based at Trusts located throughout Northern Ireland. It ensures that training standards are maintained and assures the quality of education and training provided.

The department co-ordinate the administration, recruitment, selection, assessment and appraisal and educational activities for junior doctors. There are approximately 1600 junior doctors in Northern Ireland.

The department is lead by the Postgraduate Dean, Dr Terry McMurray. He is supported by three Associate Deans and an administrative team who are available to provide information and advice.

In addition to educational activities organised in-house, education in the form of induction courses, educational meetings and lectures is provided at local hospital level under the direction of Directors of Medical Education (DME). There is a DME in each of the 5 Trust throughout the Deanery, who are appointed jointly by the Postgraduate Dean and the relevant Trust.

Heads and Deputy Heads of School and Specialty Training Programme Directors are also appointed by the Deanery.  Foundation Programme Directors and Foundation Educational Supervisors are jointly appoined by NIMDTA and the Trust.
