Hospital Medicine
The Hospital Training Department is responsible for all grades of Medical Trainees who are based at Trusts located throughout Northern Ireland. It ensures that training standards are maintained and assures the quality of education and training provided.
The department co-ordinate the administration, recruitment, selection, assessment and appraisal and educational activities for junior doctors. There are currently 566 Specialist Registrars, 809 Senior House Officers and 229 Pre-Registration House Officers.
The department is lead by the Postgraduate Dean, Dr Terry McMurray. He is supported by the Associate Dean in Foundation Training, Ms Angela Carragher and the General Professional Training Adviser, Professor Randal Hayes and an administrative team who are available to provide information and advice.
In addition to educational activities organised in-house, education in the form of induction courses, educational meetings and lectures is provided at local hospital level under the direction of Postgraduate Clinical Tutors. There are 17 Clinical Tutors throughout the Deanery, who are appointed jointly by the Postgraduate Dean and the relevant Trust. They are responsible for the management of the Postgraduate Centre within the Trust and elements of the budget associated with the educational contract.
Specialty Training Programme Directors are also appointed by the Deanery and advise the Postgraduate Dean on educational developments within their specialty and ensure that training is provided in preparation for postgraduate examinations and higher specialist qualifications.
