All medical graduates in the UK must complete Foundation Year 1 before they can obtain full registration with the GMC.
Completion of Attainment of F1 Competency form (5.1) is required for all graduates to complete a ‘Certificate of Experience’ form from the GMC to obtain full registration. In order to assess suitability for full registration, F1 doctors in Northern Ireland must have satisfactorily completed the following:
- Satisfactory assessments (6 DOPS, 6 CbD, 6 Mini-CEX, TAB)
- Complete Personal Development Plan
- Updated shared log to reflect educational experiences
- Haemovigilance Level 1 and 2 certificate (completed by end of August 2009)

- Hyponatraemia Certificate (completed by end of August 2009)
- 12 months satisfactory completion of F1 with absence for aggregated period of no more than one month (four weeks)
- Completion of PMETB Survey
Please ensure all documentation is collated in June for preparation for GMC sign off in July. This documentation must be confirmed on a summary of assessment evidence form. Please click here to download. Delay in providing documentation during July may result in failure to obtain full GMC registration by the F2 August start date.
The Northern Ireland Foundation School acts on behalf of Queen’s University School of Medicine to process GMC registrations. Applications are processed only for QUB graduates and non-UK graduates within the Northern Ireland Foundation School. Those who graduate from other UK medical schools require completion of documentation by their University’s GMC designee. This will require a counter-signature by Ms Carragher as Northern Ireland Foundation School Director. Non-QUB graduates should contact their medical school for guidance. Please see 2010 contact list GMC Full Registration contact list
Applicants for full registration need to make their application via the MyGMC online facility on the GMC website. www.gmc-uk.org. The GMC fee for Full Registration was £410 in 2009. This is reviewed annually.
Your original 5.1 form will be kept on file within the Northern Ireland Foundation School. If you would like a copy of this at a later date, please put a request in writing to foundation@nimdta.gov.uk. [back to top]
Full GMC Registration for QUB graduates working outside Northern Ireland

In order to apply for Full GMC registration to progress from F1 to F2 you must:
- Complete your application online using the online facility at MyGMC.
(http://www.gmc-uk.org/doctors/online_services/mygmc.asp) - Once you have completed your application for full registration and made your payment, you must download the Certificate of Experience (COE) form. Please ensure you leave all sections of the Certificate of Experience (COE) form blank – it must not be signed by yourself or anyone at your Trust.
- Download and complete the ‘Summary of Assessment Evidence for F1 year’ here to summarise your assessment evidence. Alternatively, we will accept a summary of evidence form used in your current Foundation School.
- Please complete all sections of the 5.1 Attainment of Competency Document. If you are unable to access this, please contact the Foundation administrator in your Trust for advice. The signature under the section ‘Recommendation by Foundation Training Programme Director (or other authorised signatory)’ must be signed and dated between 8 and 30 June 2010. Please send the Certificate of Experience, Summary of Assessment Evidence and 5.1 Attainment of Competency Document to Karen Armstrong, Foundation School Administrator following address by Wednesday 7 July 2010. All documents received will be acknowledged by email.
Once the above documentation has been received, we will complete the Certificate of Experience and forward onto the GMC on your behalf to enable your registration to be processed for commencing F2 on Wednesday 4 August 2010. If you are not fully registered by the 4 August 2010 you will not be able to commence your F2 placement. This may delay your completion of F2 and the Foundation Programme which may in turn delay your start in a specialty programme.
Completion of Foundation Year 2 - Foundation Achievement of Competency Document (FACD)
Doctors finishing Foundation training (F2) acquire a Foundation Achievement of Competency Document (FACD) before they commence Specialty Training.

- Complete Personal Development Plan
- Updated shared log to reflect educational experiences
