The specialty of Paediatrics and Child health has developed mainly over the past 4-5 decades and it is now recognised that children cannot be regarded as small adults, and that their care demands special skill and training.

Working within multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary teams has become essential as the number of children with chronic and complex disorders increases. Integration of services between hospital and community aims to provide continuity of care for children and their families. The training programme has been designed primarily for those who are considering Paediatrics and its specialties for their future career, but may also be useful for other Trainees for whom Paediatric experience is either useful or obligatory.

Paediatrics and child health includes Hospital Based Services, Community Child Health Services and Tertiary Paediatric Specialist Care. Hospital based services include in-patient care, out-patient care, day care services, intensive care, neonatal care and tertiary specialist services. Community child health services include audiology, education medicine, services for children with disability, social paediatrics and oversight of child health surveillance

There is increased emphasis in both Hospital and Community Paediatrics on health promotion, prevention and early detection of disease and the quality of survival. There is also increasing collaboration with colleagues in other fields such as child Psychiatry, Paediatric Radiology and Paediatric Surgery, to ensure the delivery of a comprehensive child health service.
