Basic Surgical Skills
Course Dates: 11, 12 & 13 September 2012

This 3-day course is designed to provide an introduction to safe surgical practice within a controlled workshop environment. It covers:
- open surgery

trauma and orthopaedics

minimal access surgery

N.B. Attendance at a Basic Surgical Skills course is a requirement for all surgical trainees who take up their first surgical appointment in or after August 1996; it is also strongly recommended that the course be undertaken as early as possible in their basic training.
The course has been agreed on an intercollegiate basis and trainees who complete the course will be issued with certification that will be reciprocally recognised by all four Royal Surgical Colleges.
Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient Course (CCrISP)
Course dates: 7-9 November 2012
Course Fee: £550
This two and a half day course is designed to advance the practical, theoretical and personal skills necessary for the care of critically ill surgical patients. It is aimed at surgeons and those who deal with surgical patients who are completing basic surgical training and will useful across the range of surgical and related disciplines.
This course is designed to draw established and new knowledge and skills into formats immediately applicable to every day practice. The emphasis is on small group teaching, hands on training and the performance of practical procedures. The course features simulated patient assessment, clinical decision making, dealing with relatives and analysis of data in critical care in addition to systematic coverage of the necessary knowledge. Candidates are supplied with a detailed course manual (to keep) and personal feedback will be provided during the course.
All participants on the course
- should have completed at least one year of basic surgical training (not including house jobs)
- should have commenced six months general surgery
- ideally have completed an ATLS course although this is not a prerequisite
