AccessNI Checks and Rehabilitation of Offenders

All trainees appointed to medical or dental posts must have Enhanced Disclosures completed prior to taking up their post as they will be working within posts which involve contact with children and vulnerable adults.  A copy of a Disclosure Certificate Application form, address continuation sheet and guidance notes for completion can be accessed below:

An Enhanced Disclosure provides information in relation to spent and unspent convictions and information about attempted prosecutions that were unsucessful or behaviour that might be indicative of criminal activity.  This information will complement current pre-employment checks and will only be used for the specific purpose for which it was requested, i.e. making a recruitment decision, for which the applicant’s full consent has been given.  The Agency will only seek Disclosure Information after a candidate has been provided with a provisional offer of employment.

NIMDTA will consider a number of factors in relation to employing someone with a criminal record:

  • Whether the conviction or other matter revealed is relevant to the position in question;
  • The seriousness of any offence or other matter revealed;
  • The length of time since the offence or other matter occurred;
  • Whether the applicant has a pattern of offending behaviour or other relevant matters;
  • Whether the applicant’s circumstances have changed since the offending behaviour of the other relevant matters occurred and
  • The circumstances surrounding the offence and the explanation(s) offered by the convicted person, which may need to be verified.

Having a criminal record will not necessarily debar you from working with NIMDTA.  This will depend on the nature of the position, together with the circumstances and background of your offences or other information contained on a Disclosure Certificate or provided directly to us by the police.
