The Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) project aims to deliver a major reform of postgraduate medical training.  It will take several years to conclude and in addition to the Foundation Programme in due course it will include progressive specialist and general practitioner training programmes.

The Modernising Medical Careers project aims to deliver a long-overdue and major reform of postgraduate medical training. The result will be doctors who are best equipped to deliver the high quality service which patients expect and deserve in the twenty-first century and able to adapt to the changes in medicine the future will undoubtedly bring.

There are seven principles of training underpinning MMC:

  • Trainee centred.
  • Competency assessed.
  • Service based.
  • Quality assured.
  • Flexible.
  • Coached.
  • Structured & streamlined.

Fundamental to the new system is the two-year Foundation Programme.

These programmes, for the first time, require doctors to demonstrate their abilities and competence against set, common standards. They will offer doctors the chance to gain insight into possible career options or to build a wider appreciation of medicine before embarking on specialist training. Most importantly MMC will deliver a modern training scheme and career structure that will allow clinical professionals to support the healthcare needs of patients.

Foundation Programmes are followed by ‘run-through’ Specialty and General Practice Training Programmes leading to a Certificate of
Completion of Training (CCT) and entry to the Specialist or General Practice Register of the General Medical Council.
