Study of Resilience and Burnout in Doctors

This national study of the UK’s medical work force will assess resilience, professional quality of life and coping mechanisms in doctors. Our study group has contacted speciality colleges throughout the UK who have agreed to disseminate our survey to their membership by email and in college newsletters. As of April 2018 the following colleges have agreed to disseminate our survey:

  • The Royal College of Emergency Medicine
  • The Royal College of General Practitioners
  • The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health
  • The Royal College of Surgeons England
  • The Royal College of Physicians London
  • Royal College of Surgeons England
  • The Pathological Society
  • Society for Acute Medicine
  • British Geriatrics Society
  • Association of Palliative Medicine
  • The British Medical Journal

This study was piloted within a single NHS trust in 2016. I have included the link to a publication from the BMJ postgraduate medical journal that reports our findings in appendix 1.

We propose your organisation would forward an email invitation to all trainees that includes a hyperlink to our online survey. The three questionnaires that make up the survey are all validated psychological measures/scoring systems and as a result are easy to complete. I have attached a PDF copy of the survey.

This study has received approval from the South Eastern Trust Research and Development office and from Queen’s University Belfast.

This is the first study of its kind in the UK and our findings will be presented and published in due course. We would be happy to forward our results of our research to your organisation for dissemination.

If you have any further questions or require any more information please do not hesitate to contact any member of our study group.
