What is Research for Clinicians Day?

Research for Clinicians Day is an annual celebration event that provides a great opportunity for Medical and Dental Trainees to explore and engage with the breadth and depth of clinical research being performed by Trainees across Northern Ireland.

How to be involved:

Trainees are encouraged to submit abstracts of original research work to be scored by a panel of expert judges. Abstracts are submitted via an official Abstract Submission Form, and a shortlist of Trainees are then invited to present their research at the 'Research for Clinicians Day' celebration event, and compete for first place!

The event also features keynote addresses from world-renowned researchers and the opportunity to meet and network with respected Researchers from a variety of clinical research backgrounds.

Who can take part?

The opportunity is open to all Foundation, Medical Specialty, Dental Core and Specialty, and GP trainees whether you want to find out about research opportunities or have a definite plan to do research which you want to discuss with a senior Queen's University Belfast or Ulster University researcher.

What are the benefits of participating?

There are multiple benefits to participating in this research event:

    • Accredit CPD Points
    • Present a new case report or case series
    • Present your efforts at quality improvement
    • Present clinical research that is in progress
    • Publication of Research Abstract in the Ulster Medical Journal

Eligibility Criteria

    • Research Abstract submissions are open to Doctors and Dentists in Training in Northern Ireland only.
    • Undergraduate Medical Students are NOT eligible for this research opportunity.
    • Abstracts must be original work, completed with the past 18 months, and NOT previously published elsewhere.
    • Abstracts should be completed in type, no smaller than Font size 10 and no longer than 250 words.
    • Abstracts should conform to the structure specific to the category of submission:
      • Basic Science or Clinical Research or Educational Research - Title, Introduction, Aims, Methods, Results and Discussion
      • Case Reports/Case Studies – Title, Introduction, Description of case/case series, Discussion
Quality Improvement – Title, Problem, Strategy for change, Measurement of Improvement, Effects of change, Discussion
    • Tables, diagrams, figures and photographs are NOT TO BE SUBMITTED at the abstract stage. These will be requested during October from successful applicants from the initial judging phase.
    • A maximum of two abstract submissions across all categories is permitted per Trainee.
    • Authorship Confirmation
Responsibility for decisions regarding the authorship of the research lies with those who carried out the work reported in the abstract. Researchers should be aware of the authorship practices within their own disciplines and should always abide by any requirements stipulated by journals as part of their instructions to authors.
Normally, an author is an individual judged to have made a substantial intellectual or practical contribution to a publication and who agrees to be accountable for that contribution. This would normally include anyone who has:
      • made a significant contribution to the conception or design of the project or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work; AND/OR
      • drafted the work or reviewed/revised it critically for important intellectual content.
    • This is general guidance only and may not apply to all disciplines or journals which may set different standards.
    • Anyone listed as an author on an abstract submission should approve the final version and accept responsibility for ensuring that he or she is familiar with its contents and can identify his or her contribution to it.
    • Researchers are advised to seek guidance on practice within their own discipline and to consult guidelines set by the funders of their research and the journals in which they hope to publish.
    • NIMDTA, QUB, UU or UMS will not accept any responsibility for errors relating to authorship of research conducted.
