There are 13 Specialist Lists in Dentistry maintained by the General Dental Council. In Northern Ireland we are currently delivering training in some of these disciplines that are essentially delivered by Consultants through the Hospital Dental Service bases:

Oral Medicine offers a diagnostic, advisory and treatment service for patients referred by dental, medical practitioners and oral specialists.
The department works closely with Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the dental specialities within the dental hospital and more widely with the departments of Rheumatology, Dermatology, Ear Nose and Throat, Haematology, Gastroenterology and Genitourinary Medicine within the Trust.
There is a three year training programme leading to the award of the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training.

This is concerned with the treatment and ongoing management of irregularities and pathology of the jaw and mouth that require surgical intervention.
This includes the specialty previously called Surgical Dentistry. There is a three year training programme leading to the award of the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training.

This is the development, prevention, and correction of irregularities of the teeth, occlusion and jaw relationships.
There is a three year training programme leading to the award of the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) but there is also a post-CCST programme that trainees may apply for in open competition leading to Consultant level training.

This deals with the restoration of diseased, injured, or abnormal teeth to normal function. It deals with all aspects of Endodontics, Periodontics and Prosthodontics which can be defined as follows:
- Endodontics: This is concerned with the cause, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases and injuries of the tooth root, dental pulp, and surrounding tissue.
- Periodontics: The diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases and disorders (infections and inflammatory) of the gums and other structures around the teeth.
- Prosthodontics: The replacement of missing teeth and the associated soft and hard tissues by prostheses (crowns, bridges, dentures) which may be fixed or removable, or may be supported and retained by implants.
