Quality Improvement, (QI), offers a systematic and evidence based health services approach to providing high quality care to patients.
Within Northern Ireland the aspiration for a high quality service to patients is set out in Quality 2020.
The General Medical Council, (GMC), regulates medical education setting standards for NIMDTA to achieve high quality education and training for trainees in General Practice.
The GMC is also promoting generic professional capabilities of which knowledge and implementation of QI is one.
The GMC also regulates individual doctors through appraisal and revalidation. There is requirement for each individual doctor to bring evidence of Quality Improvement activity to their annual appraisal which underpins revalidation and retention on the GMC register.
The RCGP sets the curriculum for GP training. It also highlights the need for GPs to acquire QI knowledge and skills.
Recognising this strategic direction of travel the GP Department in NIMDTA is providing opportunities for GP Trainees to learn about and implement Quality Improvement. These opportunities include:
- Access to the IHI Open School
- Dermatology Project Echo
The EQUIP programme in ST3
Details of each of these initiatives are available by clicking on the links above where available. As we move forward the intention is to provide more opportunities and to build on our success so far.
