Quality Improvement, (QI), offers a systematic and evidence based health services approach to providing high quality care to patients.
Within Northern Ireland the aspiration for a high quality service to patients is set out in Quality 2020.
The General Medical Council (GMC) regulates medical education and sets standards to ensure high-quality training for GP trainees. As part of its focus on Generic Professional Capabilities, the GMC emphasises the importance of understanding and applying Quality Improvement (QI) principles. It also oversees individual doctors through appraisal and revalidation.
All doctors are required to provide evidence of Quality Improvement activity at their annual appraisal, which supports both revalidation and continued registration with the GMC.
The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) sets the curriculum for GP training and highlights the need for GPs to develop QI knowledge and skills.
In response to this strategic direction, the GP Department at NIMDTA offers opportunities for trainees to learn about and implement QI. These include:
- Access to the IHI Open School
- Participation in the Dermatology Project ECHO
The EQUIP programme in ST3
Details of each of these initiatives are available by clicking on the links above where available. As we move forward the intention is to provide more opportunities and to build on our success so far.
