What is Balint?
Balint provides a framework for reflecting on our practice through study of the doctor patient relationship in the context of every day consultations. It aims to increase therapeutic effectiveness and develop self-awareness. More details can be found at https://balint.co.uk including access to Podcasts and their Twitter and Facebook accounts.
Benefits of Balint include:
- Balint groups provide a safe place for participants to talk about interpersonal aspects of their work with their patients. The Balint group experience helps to avoid professional ‘burnout’.
- The Balint group encourages the member to see the person behind the patient; which can make it easier to help the patient.
- A deeper level of understanding of both patients’ and personal feelings may be gained; with a recognition that certain patients or emotions may resonate with what is going on in their own lives. This may be causing problems. The professional can learn to avoid or even to turn these to therapeutic advantage.
