GP Trainee Assist Pathway Programme

Our GP training scheme in NI has traditionally delivered great results and happy trainees. GP training is a short packed three year programme with a few hurdles along the way.
However, we know that everyone goes through difficulties from time to time and we have supported many trainees over the years. This may be due to personal circumstances, examination results, workplace issues or health problems. If you are new to Northern Ireland, or unfamiliar with the NHS, you may require more tailored support to help you become familiar with our healthcare system and our community. Our experience suggests that so many simple things can be resolved quickly if we know sooner rather than later.

The Trainee Assist Pathway allows you to access expert help and input from a range of educators and professionals who will aim to assist you with any challenges you may experience during GP training. If you are experiencing difficulties, you can ask to be included on the Trainee Assist Pathway. Your educational or clinical supervisor may also refer you to the Trainee Assist Pathway additional support or input.

In the first instance, there is support from your Clinical Supervisor, Educational Supervisor and Programme Director. They are there to help and assist you at any stage during your programme and you should contact them directly to discuss any difficulties you are experiencing. Many local and personal issues can be resolved with their help. If this does not resolve the issues and you require further input following this, your Programme Director or yourself can contact the Associate Directors at NIMDTA. We can discuss the problem, come up with a plan, and then review things and see if they are resolved.

If you are experiencing challenges in any area, we would also recommend that you contact the Professional Support and Wellbeing Unit. They have access to a range of resources and professionals, such as occupational health, from which you may benefit. You can make a self- referral from HERE
