2025 Regional Induction Day

The Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency (NIMDTA) successfully hosted its annual Regional Induction Day on Thursday 31 July 2025 at the Lagan Valley Island Conference Centre in Lisburn. This flagship event marked a key milestone for all 367 newly appointed Foundation Year 1 doctors as they begin their medical careers across the five Health and Social Care Trusts in Northern Ireland.

The day began with a warm welcome from Dr Lorraine Parks, Director of Foundation Training at NIMDTA, followed by an inspiring Opening Address from Professor Sir Michael McBride, Chief Medical Officer for Northern Ireland. The programme provided essential guidance, practical insights, and professional support to help new doctors transition confidently into clinical practice.

Highlights from the morning sessions included:

  • A presentation on Medication Safety by Ms Angela Carrington, Lead Pharmacist for Medication Safety, HSC NI
  • Insights into Patient Discharge Summaries and Post-Death Procedures from Dr Kathryn Potter and Dr Gail Browne
  • Practical advice from current F1 doctor’s Dr Oran McGilly and Dr Nicole Gormley during the Top Tips for Foundation Training session
  • Interactive Foundation Hospital Workshops and an introduction to the Single Lead Employer modelThe afternoon focused on professional development and wellbeing, featuring:
  • An overview of the UK Foundation Programme Curriculum and TURAS ePortfolio
  • Guidance on the Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP)
  • Support sessions led by Dr Mary Murnaghan on Professional Support & Wellbeing
  • Presentations on Placement Quality Standards and GMC Professionalism Guidance

The event concluded with feedback and closing remarks, reinforcing NIMDTA’s commitment to nurturing and supporting the next generation of medical professionals.

Dr Lorraine Parks reflected, “I hope you all had a very enjoyable first day as an F1 doctor. I want to continue to emphasise just how welcome you are here today”.

This induction marked a key milestone in helping our new doctors feel prepared, supported, and confident as they begin their careers. The NIMDTA Foundation Team proudly delivered a comprehensive programme rooted in the values of professionalism, patient safety, and lifelong learning.
