Celebrating the Next Generation of GPs at the ST3 Day of Celebration
The GP Training Team hosted its annual ST3 Day of Celebration, on Thursday 26th June 2025, bringing together final-year GP registrars from across Northern Ireland for a day of reflection and recognition.
The event marks the culmination of training for ST3 GP registrars and featured a creative and interactive agenda including; GP-themed games such as True or False Quizzes, ‘Spot That Place’, and the crowd-favourite ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire'. These unique sessions showcased the innovation and camaraderie of the GP training community from across all 5 HSCNI Organisations.
NIMDTA Associate Director for GP Career Development, Dr Louise Sands delivered the welcome address, setting the tone for an exciting and enriching experience.
The event was then expertly led by NIMDTA GP Programme Director, Dr Emma Murtagh, who also delivered an inspiring presentation on GP Self-Care, reminding attendees of the importance of well-being in the profession.
A highlight of the morning included the presentation of the ‘Excellence in Training (Trainer/Educator)’ Award to NIMDTA GP Programme Director Dr Paula Houton, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to GP Education. The award was presented to Dr Houton by Dr Murtagh.
The afternoon sessions continued with Dr Gordon Kennedy, a retired GP, sharing his “Three Ps” – People, Preservation, and Professionalism approach – which has guided his distinguished career in General Practice over the years. His words offered inspiration, encouragement and perspective for all in attendance.
Attendees also had the privilege of hearing from Chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners, Dr Ursula Mason who led an engaging and interactive session on the evolving landscape of General Practice in Northern Ireland.
Dr Paula Houton, who delivered the closing remarks for the event, said:
“This vibrant and heartfelt event not only celebrated achievements but also reinforced the strong community and future promise within Northern Ireland’s General Practice. We extend our best wishes to all ST3 trainees for a well-earned summer break and look forward to more memorable celebrations in the years ahead.”
