#ChooseGPNI….your pathway to a GP career in Northern Ireland
Whether you are finishing your F2 training or coming home again after some time away, we have training programmes waiting for you to become a GP in Northern Ireland.
Support…
A team of GP Trainers, Programme Directors and dedicated administrators all form part of the support framework to allow GP Trainees in Northern Ireland to flourish. All GP Training opportunities are further supported through courses and study leave, enabling our Trainees to identify areas of special interest that they can develop in training and take forward in their future careers.
Integrated Training Programme…
After the success of the Integrated Training Programme pilot in 2023, we are delighted to offer ITP posts to all February 2024 appointments.
Trainees are based in a GP surgery for 6 months but spend half their week in a relevant community facing specialty. This replaces a hospital post in ST2. The current specialties are:
- Women’s health
- Palliative medicine
- ENT
- Dermatology
- Rheumatology
- Inclusion Health (prison, addiction, homeless, immigrant health)
This means Trainees get to bring their specialised training back into their GP practice and ultimately enhance the care experience for their patients.
Testimonials…
GP Trainees who have recently completed their integrated training have provided their feedback.

NIMDTA Director of Postgraduate General Practice Education, Dr Michele Stone said;
“Following a successful pilot of the Integrated Training Programme during 2022/23 academic year, we are delighted to offer this career opportunity within our Training Programme for 2023/24. This programme allows our Trainees to enhance specific knowledge and skills, that can be brought back into their Practice. It is refreshing to witness our GP Trainees see first-hand the benefits this can have on the care of their patients. It is also encouraging to witness Trainees embrace the current challenges that can come with being a GP with more and more remaining in Northern Ireland and choosing General Practice as their long-term career choice.”
