ENGAGE Clinical Leadership Programme - 2025 Showcase Event Winners Announced!

The showcase event was the final module of the Leadership Programme which invited trainee doctors and dentists to showcase their learning and achievements through a presentation of a Quality Improvement (QI) projects.

Ms Maura McMackin (Senior Consultant, HSCLC) commenced proceedings by welcoming all participants and the judging panel to the event, and provided a background on the ENGAGE Leadership Programme and its objectives.

The judging panel for the evening consisted of:

  • Dr Brendan Lavery, Medical Director, Western Health & Social Care Trust
  • Dr Sally-Anne Phillips, Associate Dean for Placement Quality, NIMDTA
  • Dr Claire Lundy, Consultant in Paediatric Neurodisability, Neurology and Rehabilitation in BHSCT

Following Ms McMackin’s opening remarks, the top three QI Poster Presentations were presented in full to all attendees, followed by a question and answer session.

The top three QI Poster Projects (selected via shortlisting) presented at the event were:

  • Dr David Mongan - Improving the standard of mental state examination recording in the Belfast Trust Mental Health Liaison Team
  • Dr Gary Hagan - Improving the Care of Women attending ED with Early Pregnancy Problems’
  • Rebekah Rodgers – ‘Improving Preoperative Assessment Investigations in Elective Surgery’

After retiring to consider all 3 oral presentations, the judges awarded Dr Gary Hagan first place, Dr Rebekah Rodgers second place and Dr David Mongan third place!

Ms Sandra McCarry, Principle Consultant, HSCLC, delivered the closing remarks for the event and congratulations was extended to all ENGAGE Clinical Leadership and Improvement Programme Trainees, for the year 2024-2025.

The evening was closed with an inspiring quote from Mark Twain: “Continuous improvement is better than delayed perfection”

Important Update: Medical Training (Prioritisation) Act becomes law

The Government’s Medical Training (Prioritisation) Act has now been passed by Parliament and become law. The Act brings in new rules which prioritise UK medical graduates for foundation training and give preference to UK graduates and doctors with significant NHS experience for specialty training.
