NIMDTA
Global Talent, Local Impact: NIMDTA Hosts is annual 'Enhanced Regional Induction' for International Medical Graduates

The Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency (NIMDTA) was delighted to welcome a full house of International Medical Graduates (IMGs) to its annual ‘Regional Enhanced Induction’ event, held at the GMC Offices in Belfast City Centre on Thursday 14th August 2025.

With breathtaking rooftop views across the city and beyond, the venue provided an inspiring backdrop for a day of connection, learning and support chaired by Dr Charlie Irwin.

The event opened with a warm welcome from NIMDTA Postgraduate Medical Dean and Director of Education, Professor Camille Harron, who set the tone for a dynamic and informative programme.

Attendees were treated to a powerful ‘Lived Experience’ presentation by Dr Yusra and Dr Lolokta, who both shared personal stories, practical tips, and reflections on the supportive nature of working in Northern Ireland’s healthcare system.

Dr Halima Arikewuyo followed with a comprehensive overview of the HSCNI structure, helping new trainees understand the framework they’ll be working within. The agenda also featured sessions on:

  • Reflective Practice and e-Portfolio– Dr Charlie Irwin
  • Prescribing Errors & Communication with Primary Care– Dr Gareth Lewis
  • Feedback and Working Within Competence– Dr Halima Arikewuyo
  • Communication Skills & Mental Capacity Assessment– Dr John Harty
  • Educational and Pastoral Support– Prof Camille Harron
  • Palliative Care– Dr Conal Corr

A particularly memorable moment came when Dr Halima Arikewuyo presented Special Recognition Awards to Dr Charlie Irwin and Dr Sally Anne Philips, honouring their unwavering dedication and passion in supporting IMGs as they begin their journey to live, work, and train in Northern Ireland.

The day concluded with a reflective session and a lively Q&A, giving attendees the opportunity to engage directly with speakers and peers.

NIMDTA Postgraduate Medical Dean and Director of Education, Professor Camille Harron said,

"This induction is a key part of NIMDTA’s N2NI (New to Northern Ireland) initiative, designed to support IMGs as they transition into the Northern Ireland healthcare environment. The event not only provided essential knowledge but also fostered a sense of community and belonging among new trainees."

NIMDTA Senior Professional Support Manager, Ms Roisin Campbell said,

"NIMDTA is delighted to support our international medical and dental graduates commencing training programmes in Northern Ireland. This day was greatly appreciated by our doctors and dentists as provided an opportunity to network, make friends and learn in a supportive environment.

NIMDTA is very proud of the recognition from the previous cohort of New to Northern Ireland trainees for Dr Charlie Irwin (Adept Fellow) and Dr Sally Anne Phillips (Associate Dean). This initiative was led by NIMDTA Postgraduate Medical Dean and Director of Education, Professor Camille Harron with vision and enthusiasm."
