NIMDTA
Introducing... Medic Refresh!

A new digital learning resource, MedicRefresh, has been launched on the LearnHSCNI platform to support resident doctors in training from Internal Medicine Training (IMT) level upwards, including:

  • Internal Medicine Trainees (IMT)
  • Registrars in General Medicine
  • Trainees rotating into new medical specialties
  • Doctors returning to work after absence or maternity leave
  • Trainees seeking structured revision for postgraduate exams

The initiative was first developed and produced by Dr Therese McCartney as part of her ADEPT Fellowship in 2021/2022, and its purpose was to refresh medical knowledge, provide up‑to‑date clinical guidelines, and support doctors in maintaining confidence and delivering high‑quality patient care. Since then, it has developed to include helpful resources for Resident Doctors in Training returning from Out of Programme (OOP).

Dr McCartney said, “At any one time in the UK around 10% of doctors in training take approved time out of their programme. Many trainees find returning to clinical practice a daunting process with self-reported diminished self-confidence. Governing bodies place the onus on the resident doctors in training to keep skills up-to-date.

While the medical training pathway progresses from Foundation Year 1 & 2 (FY1–FY2) into Internal Medicine Training and ultimately towards Registrar posts in medical subspecialties, MedicRefresh is intentionally tailored to meet the educational needs of IMT‑level doctors and above.

The course is divided into medical specialities and each speciality covers core topics which are essential to trainees’ practice, to refresh their knowledge or to be alerted to changes in protocol and procedures.

The platform can also be used for resident doctors returning from Out of Programme (OOP) experiences, helping ease the transition back into clinical work after periods such as maternity leave, research, career breaks, or other absences. I am delighted that many colleagues will benefit from this resource.”
