NIMDTA Culture Night Celebrates the Rich Diversity of Our Medical Workforce

Our medical community came together in a joyful celebration of culture, talent, and togetherness during a vibrant Culture Night hosted in Belfast on Friday 6th June.

The evening served as a tribute to the diverse backgrounds of our medical workforce and provided a unique opportunity to bring resident doctors and colleagues together through global music, dance, and cultural exchange.

Organised by Dr Charlotte Irwin, ADEPT Fellow, the event showcased an incredible line up of performances that reflected the richness of the international medical community. From traditional Irish music to classical piano, and from energetic dance to soulful song, the evening was filled with energy, colour, and connection.

Performers included:

  • Clann Uí HUiginn (Higgins Clan) - Traditional Irish Folk Music Band – bringing authentic Irish sounds to the stage
  • Irish dancers from the Owens Academy – lighting up the floor with traditional steps
  • Dr Shahanje Kabir – enchanting the audience with Bengali song
  • Dr Amrita Gurung – performing beautiful Nepalese dance
  • Dr Gareth Lewis – delivering a captivating piano performance
  • Dr Ramy Waly and his family – offering the unique sounds of Arabic music
  • Magician Caolan McBride – wowing the crowd with an unforgettable magic show

The evening was formally opened with a warm welcome from the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Ms Tracy Kelly, followed by an opening address by the Chief Medical Officer for Northern Ireland, Professor Sir Michael McBride.

Dr Irwin, who led the organisation of the event, said:

“I was blown away by all the incredible performances that helped create such a vibrant atmosphere in the evening. They made the night possible, and I’m so grateful for the time and preparation they gave during such a busy period.”

The event also featured a bustling information and culture fair, with stalls hosted by a wide range of organisations and community partners. These included:

Community Arts Partnership, Visit NI, Belfast City Council, SLE, PSW, Valued Trainees, SAS, RCGP, MDU, BMA, BDA, RQIA, Healthcare Library, GMC, Belfast Trust Fostering Service, and stalls representing Arabic, Nepali, and Egyptian culture, as well as ArtsEkta, Handloom sarees, and Wellbeing Massage.

The stallholders added to the richness of the evening, offering information, support, cultural displays, and a welcoming space for doctors to connect, learn, and celebrate. Their enthusiasm and presence were deeply appreciated.

Culture Night 2025 was a true testament to the power of community, diversity, and collaboration within the health service – and the overwhelming success of the evening has sparked excitement for future celebrations to come.
