GMC Recognised Trainers – Guidance for Postgraduate Medical Education
Who is a GMC Recognised Trainer?
In postgraduate medical education, the General Medical Council (GMC) defines a Trainer as either:
- Named Clinical Supervisor (CS)
- Named Educational Supervisor (ES)
Anyone in these roles must be appropriately trained and fully recognised as a Trainer to meet GMC standards.
Achieving Recognition
NIMDTA delivers the Achieving Recognition programme to help trainers meet these requirements.
To become a GMC Recognised Trainer, you must complete three mandatory courses:
- Teaching the Teacher
- Supervisory Skills
- Trainee Support
Plus complete the online training module:
Courses completed within a 3-year period can be accepted towards recognition.
Equivalent courses may be reviewed for acceptance.
Completion of the QUB Postgraduate Cert/Diploma/MSc in Clinical Education can be accepted as an equivalent for:
- Teaching the Teacher
- Supervisory Skills
- Trainee Support
Plus complete the online training module:
All course certificate should be submitted to the Recognised Trainer team for review.

Interested in Becoming a Postgraduate Recognised Trainer (ES or CS)?
To start the process:
- Contact your Trust Medical Education Centre (MEC)
- They will initiate your recognition process and add your details to the Recognised Trainer Platform.

South Eastern Trust: postgraduate@setrust.hscni.net
Southern Trust: medical.education@southerntrust.hscni.net

- Access Setup
- Once added, the Recognised Trainer team will contact you to obtain your LearnHSCNI username and email address.
- This ensures you have the correct access to book onto our Achieving Recognition courses via the LearnHSCNI platform.
( Please note: The platform can only be accessed using your Trust HSCNI email account.)
- Course Booking
- After access is confirmed, the Recognised Trainer team will notify you and share details of upcoming Achieving Recognition (AR) courses.
- Complete Mandatory Training
- You must complete all three courses:
- Teaching the Teacher
- Supervisory Skills
- Trainee Support
- You must complete all three courses:
Plus complete the online training module:
- Submit Certificates
- Once all courses are completed, submit your certificates for review to the Recognised Trainer Team - Recognised.Trainers@hscni.net
- GMC Recognition
- After certificate verification, the team will process your GMC Recognised Trainer status through the GMC website and notify you by email with your official date of recognition.
