SAS Contracts

Dept of Health Specialty doctor, Associate Specialist and Specialist doctor T&Cs

As a SAS doctor or dentist, you should have a Job Plan in place. This should be kept up to date and reviewed regularly. While job planning meetings with your Clinical Director usually take place annually, you can request a review at any time.
Guidance on job planning is available within your Trust, with additional links to relevant guidance provided below.

Your job plan should be uploaded as part of your annual appraisal. Appraisal provides an opportunity to reflect on the full scope of your practice and to discuss and agree your personal development plan for the year ahead.

Annual appraisals also contribute to five‑yearly revalidation, which is a requirement for maintaining your licence to practise with the GMC.

Each Trust provides local guidance on job planning, appraisal and revalidation, and the NIMDTA SAS Professional Development Programme regularly offers training to support these processes. Details of upcoming webinars and workshops will be available on our events page.

Medical Indemnity

Doctors and Dentists are advised to join a Medical Defence Union to arrange Medical Protection cover for legal advice in the event of GMC, criminal or coroner proceedings. These are not covered in basic NHS indemnity.

Individual Royal Colleges provide guidance on Continual Professional Development requirements.

Check with your own college on access to their CPD log. Keeping this up to date helps with preparing your Appraisal.

SAS Dentists who are registered with the GDC are required to complete 10 hours CPD every 2 years and log activity annually. Click HERE for more information.
