Portfolio Pathway for SAS Doctors in Northern Ireland

At NIMDTA, we recognise the valuable contributions of Specialty, Associate Specialist, and Specialist (SAS) doctors and dentists across the Health and Social Care (HSC) system in Northern Ireland. With over 700 SAS professionals forming a vital part of the medical workforce, we are committed to supporting their career development through flexible, structured, and rewarding pathways.

What is the Portfolio Pathway?

The Portfolio Pathway is designed for experienced SAS doctors and dentists who wish to demonstrate their capabilities and progress in their careers—particularly those aiming for recognition at the level of Consultant or Specialist. This route provides an alternative to traditional training pathways, allowing professionals to showcase their skills, experience, and contributions through a comprehensive portfolio.

Who is it for?

This pathway is ideal for SAS doctors and dentists who:

  • Have substantial clinical experience (typically 6+ years in their specialty)
  • Are not currently in a formal training programme
  • Are seeking career progression, including Specialist registration via CESR (Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration)
  • Want to develop leadership, teaching, research, or service innovation roles
