Medical Indemnity

Doctors and Dentists are advised to join a Medical Defence Union to arrange Medical Protection cover for legal advice in the event of GMC, criminal or coroner proceedings. These are not covered in basic NHS indemnity.

Job Planning, Appraisal and Revalidation

As a SAS doctor or dentist you should have a Job Plan. This should be reviewed regularly and kept up to date.

It is common practice to have a Job Planning meeting with your Clinical Director annually but you can request a Job Plan review at any stage.

Guidance on Job Planning can be found within your trust and further links to guidance are attached below:

Regional Guidance on Job Planning for Specialty doctors and Associate Specialists 2008 contracts

Your Job Plan should be uploaded to your Annual Appraisal. Annual appraisal is an opportunity to reflect on the full scope of your practice and discuss your personal development plan for the year ahead.  Annual appraisals inform a 5 yearly Revalidation. This is a requirement to retain your licence to practise with the GMC.

Each Trust has guidance on Job Planning, Appraisal and Revalidation and the NIMDTA SAS Professional Development Programme regularly provides training on these. Look out for the next webinar or workshop on our events page.

CPD requirements and College CPD Diary

Individual Royal Colleges provide guidance on Continual Professional Development requirements.

Check with your own college on access to their CPD log. Keeping this up to date helps with preparing your Appraisal.

SAS Dentists who are registered with the GDC are required to complete 10 hours CPD every 2 years and log activity annually. Click HERE for more information.
